Acne is usually associated with the changing of the hormones of
the body during puberty. The primary hormone that is secreted
when a male goes through puberty is called testosterone and
acne is an intense kind of response to the testosterone.
Females also secrete smaller amounts of testosterone when she
goes through puberty along with a number of other hormones.
Puberty is certainly a time when a young person's hormones can
lead to acne. In addition, another cause of acne is when
the pores of the skin become clogged with bacteria, oils, dirt,
and other debris.
Usually as a teenager becomes an adult, the hormonal changes
regulate themselves and they outgrow the causes of
acne. However,
some adults do not outgrow this condition. The hormone testosterone is
converted to dihydrotesterone which is then converted to cause
excessive amounts of oil. Excessive secretions of oil
block the pores in the body leading to the formation of
acne.
Another factor of what causes acne is a condition called
retention hyperkeratosis in which the body produces too many
skin cells. In fact, there are so many skin cells produced that
the body cannot shed or get rid of the excessive cells from the
epidermis (outer layer of the skin) and the pores become
clogged. In addition, the skin cells may become clogged by dirt
and bacteria leading to acne.
One of the popular misconceptions regarding what causes acne is
the eating of chocolates and greasy foods. Unless these find a
direct pathway to the pores of the skin, eating these foods
cannot lead to the formation of acne. Drinking carbonated
drinks is another misconception regarding what causes acne.
However, if you do not have a healthy balanced diet, this may
lead to the development of the primary causes of
acne.
